Sanding. Priming. Preparing.

Working in this heat is a nightmare.
Yesterdays construction consisted of the base unit - without the back panel, so that the gubbings can go in and test done etc, and the screen housing - without the front panel as it’s being counter sunk that’ll have to wait til monday, theres only so many hours in the day.

Im slightly concerned that the plinth top area isn’t big enough, it looks really odd to me, and maybe the heigh is slightly short. Hope that doesn’t cause to much of an issue for the make-up of the plinths… but hey, you have to plan for the unexpected!

Thought about changing the colour of the manual pump… this paint aint upto the job.

Maths and measureing. Not my strong points.

Few snaps of the contraption.

So sketch. Had to use a pencil for tensioning as the elastic was too long to begin with. It’s ugly as sin but thats how the inside would work. Still to be covered over.

This time the air bag has been laid out flat at full length, this immediately corrected the issue of one side coming down faster than the other.

The length of the bag is still within the anthropometric data range so it will now be so. The connection tube will have to exit the device from the side. The other connecting tube was attached to a pressure monitor. Not sure what to do with it.  Keep it as an accompaniment for the video, a visual aid of the hidden build up of pressure inside the device. Or take it away so the user is not so aware of said build up, only aware of the affect of the build up of pressure….

Sleep on it.

It worked. It finally worked. No steps. No bumps. Glorious.

Not overly happy with the result, the lines around the letters are really annoying me. Maybe it’s not right, the smallest surface area should be in the centre of the letter, that would make it look more like a physical cut. Then again in making it so I run the risk of it actually breaking skin - not a result I’m after. Maybe i’m just obsessing over it and in actual fact will never achieve the result I have dreamed up in my head.

What we do have though, is a set of tiles that work. They are clear. They convey the correct message - the edges need a bit of sanding to eliminate that box thing thats going on again but thats superficial and easily correctable.

Also, nice motivational message on my laptop right there.

Not my fault

For once, something went wrong, and the fault was not my own. Our marvellous 3d printer has had hiccups and the final pieces have come out with steps in them. Just no use. Not only is this a waste of money & resources. It’s a waste of time and a big old spanner in the works.

For the foreseeable future 3d printing may not be an option. Time for plan…. E, is it i’m on now?

A very kind donation of a wad of Delrin (polyoxymethylene, CNC, self-lube, machining material) was made to me this afternoon, allowing the pieces to be CNC’d - only problem being the machine tool isn’t small enough to cut the letters with great accuracy. Scaling the letters up would allow them to be cut properly but i feel they are already at their maximum size, making them any bigger will make it look more comic and (not to mention making the whole device increase in size) detract from their intended impact, in my opinion. Therefore this will be reserved as the absolute last resort.

I’ll maintain hope, for now that the problem can be fixed and the pieces re-printed in time.

In terms of the device - the resolved solution of the project - yeah the aesthetic might not make much sense right now, it may not be in context, thats because this device is coupled with cinematographic aid which gives depth. It’ll click. It’ll all come together. Give it time.

Tonights task: Commit to final measurements, cutting paths drawn up and get the skeleton of the piece laser cut first thing in the morning.

14 days left. Lets do this.

Fabric tests for hiding the mechanism when it’s working.

Putting a face on the front of it make it all a bit cloak and dagger, adds a bit of mystery to it.

Its a bit uncanny when it starts to make contact with your arm, even though I know whats happening it still got me a bit by surprise..

This was just a trial for the face of the box (using the old time ), but from the last photo you cane see a hefty line through my tattoo… thats come from the edge if the insert that the word tiles are on.

Thats never happened before, but if it’s going to start - thats a major issue.

Lil video from the other day of the mechanism working. Pretty crude. But you see how it’ll work. Also hi-lights how one side’s not coming down as well as the other.

Desensitised

There’s a girl. I see her on the same bus as me most mornings. One morning she was stood at the bus stop outside my house. When we were on the bus I couldn’t help but observe her, as I do with most people. Her hair was a lovely colour of dyed red and sat really nicely, she was wearing a pretty cool cardigan and her sleeves were rolled up. I thought it was a bit cold that day to not be wearing more than that. Her bag, a wee light tan, leather, hard shelled thing with delicate white stitching around the edges, was a camera case; she must do something to do with photography, I’d also seen her around uni a couple of times. She sat content gazing out the window for the majority of the journey.

A woman got on and sat down next to her and began to shiftily look back and forth from the girls lap to her own.

The girls hands were resting on her legs.

If the woman had not done so and drawn my attention to it, I guess I would have missed this completely.

For all of the time I spent observing the minor details of this girl, I hadn’t noticed that her arms were completely covered, from wrist to elbows, in scars.

Just sayin’
